Greetings skiers,

    A short update….2 bridges got put in by our track setter Joe yesterday—Emerald River and Kicking Horse Flats.  It is now colder out and maybe our snow will start accumulating.  

    Meanwhile…walking around Emerald is easy & very well packed.  The lake is freezing up—but beware…not safe!

    Joe will bring out all the track setting equipment in the next few days and hopefully take the sled out for a run—to cut a few trees down at the same time.

    The FRAA(Field Recreation Advisory Association) has taken over the sled and insurance for the trailer last month. And a few new volunteers have offered up to help with the Ski Club. Marilyn and Bruce are having some health issues lately so you won’t see us on the trails so much—but I can blog!  I’ll let you know when the first tracks are down. Just need a good dump with no melting!!!

   A great opportunity has come to us via Ron Allen on behalf of the Lake Louise Ski Resort and the “Go International Volunteer Program”. Ron is the overall manager of the Go Program and there are three groups of 5 volunteers coming this summer. The first group arrives in July and the last group finishes at the end of September.We can utilize these many hands of the volunteers to improve our x-c ski trail, mountain bike & hiking trails in Yoho.

The areas to focus these efforts on are –along the Kicking Horse Fire road and on the Tally Ho to the Natural Bridge from Field. Volunteers are ONLY permitted to use hand operated pruning shears or SMALL hand pruning saws. This would really improve travel year-round by simply hand cutting small saplings and brush on the main trail.  These trails are first to open in November for x-c skiing with minimal snow, but brush is always catching our skis/bindings until late December and each year it is getting worse—which is hazardous on its own.

 A longer Restricted Activity  Permit(Aug./Sept.) from Parks Canada allows the Ski Club to benefit from this wonderful opportunity.

     I would like to thank the “Go International Volunteers” with Ron Allen & Parks Canada for all their help. Everyone will be enjoying the ski trails so much more now. Marilyn & Bruce

We’re still skiing! Lost a lot of snow and some trails are finished–unless we get more snow? Joe tried to track the Kicking Horse Trail yesterday but it’s too far gone…..so is the Connector and the Horse Trail at Emerald. He did set another track ON the ice–and on the Fan at Emerald–bring your tank tops! It is lovely and hot out there! Next up will be CRUST skiing–off trail but we are not there yet. Best is yet to come!

Since Friday–double track ON the ice at Emerald Lake and new tracks all around the Fan, Horse Trail and Connector to Field! One switch on the sled died but is getting fixed in Golden–Joe will do the Kicking Horse Trail next. The BEST of the BEST is finally here! Enjoy!
